Sun Sailor LETTER: St. Louis Park pickleball players for Steffen

by Jim Parnell, St. Louis Park, published 9/11/25

To the Editor:

As an avid pickleball player and long time resident of St. Louis Park, I’m writing to advocate for the expansion of pickleball facilities in our community.

Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, and for good reason. It’s accessible, affordable and brings people together—regardless of age, race or socioeconomic background. Whether you're a retiree looking for low-impact exercise or a teenager seeking a fun, fast-paced game, pickleball offers a unique opportunity to connect, stay active and build community. The game is truly unique because players of different skill level can play with each other and have fun.

Unfortunately, St. Louis Park has very few dedicated pickleball courts and demand far exceeds availability. This shortage limits access to a sport that promotes physical health, mental wellbeing and social connection. Other cities in the metro area have responded to this growing interest by investing in more courts—and it’s time we do the same.

There are several parks in our city that could accommodate new courts without creating noise concerns for nearby residents. With thoughtful planning and community input, we can expand access while being respectful of our neighborhoods. For those who are less familiar - approximately four pickleball courts can fit in the footprint of a single tennis court.

Importantly, Sarah Steffen, who is running for City Council, has voiced strong support for building more pickleball courts in St. Louis Park. Her commitment to inclusive recreation and community wellness is exactly what we need in local leadership. I encourage fellow residents to remember her on Election Day.

Let’s invest in a healthier, more connected St. Louis Park—one pickleball court at a time!
